ভাঙা হচ্ছেনা মিনিস্টার বাড়ি, আদালতের নির্দেশ

সিলেট নগরীর পাঠানটুলাস্থ ঐতিহ্যবাহী ‘মিনিস্টার বাড়ি’ ভাঙার কাজ আগামী রোববার পর্যন্ত বন্ধ রাখার নির্দেশ দিয়েছে প্রত্নতত্ত্ব অধিদফতর। শুক্রবার (২৪ অক্টোবর) সকালে মিনিস্টার বাড়ি পরিদর্শন শেষে অধিদফতরের গবেষণা সহকারী মো: ওমর ফারুক এ নির্দেশনা দেন। 

জানা যায়, সিলেটের প্রাচীন অনেক স্থাপনার মতোই সম্প্রতি হাতুড়ি শাবলের আঘাতে গুড়িয়ে দেয়া হচ্ছিল মিনিস্টার বাড়িটি। ব্যবহার অনুপযোগী হয়ে যাওয়ায় মালিকপক্ষ ১৮ লাখ টাকায় ভাঙারির কাছে ঐতিহাসিক বাড়িটি বিক্রি করেন। ভাঙারির নির্দেশেই বাড়িটি ভাঙছেন বলে জানিয়েছেন ভাঙা কাজে নিয়োজিতরা।

তবে নান্দনিক স্থাপত্যশৈলীর দৃষ্টিনন্দন ও প্রাচীন এ বাড়িটি ভাঙার কার্যক্রম শুরু হওয়ায় সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমে সমালোচনার ঝড় উঠে। মিডিয়ায় সংবাদ প্রকাশের পর নড়েচড়ে বসে প্রত্নতত্ত্ব অধিদফতর। শুক্রবার সরেজমিনে পরিদর্শন করে বাড়ি ভাঙার কাজ বন্ধের নির্দেশ দেয় তারা।

জানা গেছে, ঐতিহ্যবাহী এ বাড়িটির নাম মিনিস্টার বাড়ি হওয়ার কারণ অবিভক্ত ভারতবর্ষের আসাম প্রদেশের শিক্ষামন্ত্রী আব্দুল হামিদ। পরবর্তী সময়ে দেশ ভাগের পর তিনি তৎকালীন পাকিস্তান সরকারে শিক্ষামন্ত্রীর দায়িত্বও পালন করেন।

আব্দুল হামিদের বোন হাফিজা বানু ছিলেন আইনজীবী আবু আহমদ আব্দুল হাফিজের মা ও সাবেক অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আবদুল মুহিত, সাবেক পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী এ কে আবুল মোমেনের দাদি। এ বাড়িটির সাথে মিশে আছে পাকিস্তানের সাবেক প্রেসিডেন্ট মোহাম্মদ আলী জিন্নাহর স্মৃতি। তিনি এক সময় এখানে বিশ্রাম নিয়েছিলেন বলেও জানা যায়। মিনিস্টার আব্দুল হামিদের চাচা মৌলভী আব্দুল করিমও ছিলেন একজন বরেণ্য শিক্ষাবিদ, লেখক ও জাতীয়তাবাদী কর্মী। যার বদান্যতার জন্য তাকে সিলেটের মহসীন নামে অভিহিত করা হতো।

বাড়িটির মালিকপক্ষের লোক আব্দুল হামিদের নাতি আনিসুল ইসলাম বলেন, ‘বাড়িটি ব্যবহার অনুপযোগী হয়ে পড়েছে। ছাদ দিয়ে পানি পড়ে। এছাড়া এ বাড়ির পেছনে আমাদের আরো বাড়িঘর রয়েছে। তাই এ পুরনো বাড়িটি ভেঙে ফেলতে হচ্ছে। এটি ভাঙতে আমাদেরও কষ্ট হচ্ছে। তবে নিরুপায় হয়ে ভাঙতে হচ্ছে।’

Court Halts Demolition of Historic ‘Minister Bari’ in Sylhet

The Department of Archaeology has ordered that demolition work on the historic ‘Minister Bari’ in Pathantula, Sylhet city, be suspended until next Sunday. The directive came on Friday (October 24) following an on-site inspection by the department’s research assistant, Md. Omar Faruk.

It was learned that the century-old Minister Bari, like many other heritage structures in Sylhet, was being demolished with hammers and crowbars in recent days. The owners reportedly sold the deteriorated building to a scrap dealer for Tk 1.8 million, and the demolition crew said they were working under the buyer’s instruction.

However, as the demolition began, photos and videos of the elegant and architecturally significant house sparked a storm of criticism on social media. After widespread media coverage, the Department of Archaeology intervened and ordered an immediate halt to the demolition during their inspection on Friday morning.

The house, locally known as “Minister Bari,” derives its name from Abdul Hamid, who served as the Education Minister of Assam Province in undivided India. After the partition, he also held the position of Education Minister in the then Pakistan government.

Abdul Hamid’s sister Hafiza Banu was the mother of noted lawyer Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz and the grandmother of former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and former Foreign Minister Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen. The residence also holds historical significance as it is said that Pakistan’s former President Muhammad Ali Jinnah once rested there during a visit to Sylhet.

Abdul Hamid’s uncle, Moulvi Abdul Karim, was a distinguished educationist, writer, and nationalist activist, widely respected for his generosity and known in Sylhet as “Mohsin of Sylhet.”

Speaking about the situation, Anisul Islam, grandson of Minister Abdul Hamid and a member of the owning family, said,

“The house has become uninhabitable. Rainwater leaks through the roof, and we have other properties behind it. We’re saddened to see it go, but there was no alternative but to demolish it.”
