শ্রীমঙ্গলের সাপ্তাহিক হাটে বিক্রি হয় পোষা পাখিসহ নানা প্রাণী

মৌলভীবাজার জেলার অন্যতম বৃহৎ প্রাচীন গ্রামীণ হাট শ্রীমঙ্গলের ভৈরব বাজার এখনও শতবর্ষের সাক্ষী হয়ে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে। ঐতিহ্যবাহী এই বাজারে নিত্যপ্রয়োজনীয় বিভিন্ন পণ্য কেনাবেচা হলেও সপ্তাহের প্রতি শুক্রবার হাঁস-মোরগ, কবুতর, ছাগল, ভেড়া, মেষসহ বিভিন্ন রকম পোষা পাখি কেনাবেচার জন্য সর্বাধিক খ্যাতি পেয়েছে। 

শুক্রবার (২৪ অক্টোবর) ভৈরব বাজারে গিয়ে দেখা গেছে, হাটের পশ্চিম দিকে হাঁস-মোরগসহ নানা রকম প্রাণীর মেলা। সারি ধরে ছোট-বড় মোরগ নিয়ে বসেছেন অনেকে। এর মধ্যে যেমন মোরগের ব্যবসায়ী আছেন, তেমনি অনেক নারী-পুরুষ গেরস্ত তাঁদের পোষা মোরগ নিয়ে হাটে এসেছেন। কেউ নিয়ে এসেছেন হাঁস, মোরগের ছানা। অনেকে নিয়ে এসেছেন নানা জাতের কবুতর। কেউ বসেছেন তিতির পাখির ছোট-মাঝারি বাচ্চা নিয়ে। কেউ সাদা-কালো দুই জাতেরই খরগোশ নিয়ে বসেছেন। হাটের পূর্ব দিকের স্থান ছাগলের জন্য নির্ধারিত। হাটে বেশ কিছু পাঁঠাও বিক্রির জন্য তোলা হয়েছে। সিলেট বিভাগের বিভিন্ন স্থান থেকে এই হাটে বিক্রির জন্য এসব প্রাণী নিয়ে এসেছে বিক্রেতারা। এতে উপচেপড়া ভিড় ছিল ক্রেতাদের। কয়েক ঘণ্টার কেনাবেচায় জমজমাট হয়ে ওঠে হাটটি। সন্ধ্যার অন্ধকার নামার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই গুটিয়ে যায় সব আয়োজন। সবকিছু নিয়ে ঘরমুখী হন ব্যবসায়ী ও ক্রেতা-বিক্রেতা। মুহূর্তেই পরিণত হয় ভাঙা হাটে। 

মৌলভীবাজার জেলার শ্রীমঙ্গল উপজেলার কালাপুর ইউনিয়নের মৌলভীবাজার-শ্রীমঙ্গল সড়কের মধ্যেই পড়েছে ভৈরব বাজারটি। আগে বাজারের একদিকে সড়কের পাশে এই হাট বসত। বর্তমানে বাজারের উত্তর পাশে ব্যক্তিগত জমি ইজারা নিয়ে হাটকে সম্প্রসারিত করা হয়েছে। 

স্থানীয়ভাবে ভৈরব বাজার নামেই বেশ পরিচিত এটি। শুধু শ্রীমঙ্গল উপজেলা বা মৌলভীবাজার জেলা নয়, সমৃদ্ধ এ বাজারটির পরিচিতি রয়েছে পুরো সিলেট অঞ্চলে। বিক্রির দিক থেকে জেলার সবচেয়ে বড় পোষা পাখির হাট হিসেবে স্বীকৃত হলেও সংশ্লিষ্ট কারো কারও মতে, জেলার প্রাচীন এ বাজারটি পুরো সিলেট অঞ্চলের সর্ববৃহৎ গ্রামীণ বাজার। এ হাটের প্রভাব শুধু পেষা পাখি নয়। বাজার সংলগ্ন অন্যান্য দোকান, হোটেল ও পরিবহন ব্যবস্থাতেও পড়ছে। 

স্থানীয় বাসিন্দারা জানিয়েছেন, এটি শত বছরের পুরোনো। চা-বাগান, হাইল হাওর, সমতলের গ্রামগুলোকে কেন্দ্র করে যুগ যুগ ধরে এটি সম্প্রসারিত হয়েছে। যোগাযোগের ক্ষেত্রেও এটির অবস্থান ভালো। অন্য হাটবাজারের মতোই এই হাটে মাছ, সবজি, মৌসুমি নানা রকম ফসলসহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের পণ্য বেচাকেনা হয়ে থাকে। প্রতিদিনই হাট বসে। তবে বছর ২০ আগে থেকে এটি নতুনভাবে পরিচিত হয়ে ওঠেছে। এখানে সপ্তাহের প্রতি শুক্রবার ছাগল, ভেড়া, হাঁস, মোরগ, কবুতর, পোষা পাখিসহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের পোষা প্রাণী বিক্রি হয়ে থাকে। 

শুধু আশপাশের গ্রাম নয়; শ্রীমঙ্গল, মৌলভীবাজার সদর, রাজনগর, কমলগঞ্জ, হবিগঞ্জের শায়েস্তাগঞ্জসহ বিভিন্ন স্থান থেকে ক্রেতা-বিক্রেতা এই হাটে ভিড় করেন। দুপুরের পর থেকে হাটে লোকজনের আসা শুরু হয়। বেলা দুই-তিনটার মধ্যেই হাটটি জমে ওঠে। সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত এই হাট চলে। সন্ধ্যা ঘনিয়ে এলে ধীরে ধীরে হাটটি ভেঙে যায়। 

ভৈরব বাজারের ইজারাদার লিটন আহমেদ বলেন, ‘হাটটির বয়স ১০০ বছরের বেশি হবে। তবে, ২০ বছর আগে থেকে হাটটি হাঁস, মোরগ, ছাগলসহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের প্রাণীর জন্য পরিচিত হয়ে ওঠেছে।’

মৌলভীবাজার ও হবিগঞ্জ জেলাসহ বিভিন্ন স্থান থেকে লোকজন তাদের পোষা হাঁস, মোরগ, ছাগল নিয়ে এই হাটে আসেন। পাইকারেরাও বহু ধরণের প্রাণী নিয়ে আসেন। প্রতি শুক্রবার দুপুর আড়াইটার দিকে হাট শুরু হয়, সন্ধ্যা সাতটা পর্যন্ত হাট চলে। আগে বাজারের একদিকে সড়কের পাশে এই হাট বসলেও এখন বাজারের উত্তর পাশে ব্যক্তিগত জমি ইজারা নিয়ে হাটকে সম্প্রসারিত করা হয়েছে। এই হাটে সিলেট বিভাগের বিভিন্ন স্থান থেকে পোষা প্রাণী নিয়ে আসেন বিক্রেতারা। শৌখিন লোকজন এখানে ভিড় করছেন, তাঁরা ঘুরে ঘুরে প্রাণী পছন্দ করছেন। দরদাম করছেন। দরদামে পোষালে খাঁচাসহ পাখি, কবুতর বা অন্য প্রাণী নিয়ে যাচ্ছেন। 

রাজনগর থেকে আসা একজন বিক্রেতা জানান, তিনি দুইটি মেষ নিয়ে এসেছিলেন। এ দুইটিই তার পোষা। দাম উঠেছে ১০ হাজার টাকা পর্যন্ত। তিনি ১২ হাজার টাকার নিচে তিনি বিক্রি করতে চাইছেন না। তাই, মেষ দুইটি ফেরত নিয়ে যাচ্ছেন। 

বাজারের ব্যবসায়ী ফাহিম হাসান বলেন, ‘আমাদের ভৈরব বাজার বাজার শুধু মৌলভীবাজার নয়, পুরো সিলেট অঞ্চলের সবচেয়ে বড় ও পুরাতন গ্রামীণ হাটার। এ বাজারে দেশীয় বিভিন্ন প্রাণী কিনতে আসেন পুরো সিলেট অঞ্চলের মানুষ।’ 

শুক্রবার বাজারটি লোকে লোকারণ্য হয়ে ওঠে। এ বাজারের কারণে ভৈবব বাজারের অন্যান্য ব্যবসাপ্রতিষ্ঠানেও এদিন ভালো ব্যবসায় হয়। 

স্থানীয়রা মনে করেন, ভৈরব বাজার আজ শুধু একটি হাট নয়, এটি একটি ঐতিহ্য ও এ অঞ্চলের অর্থনৈতিক প্রাণ।

Bhairab Bazar: A Century-Old Market in Srimangal

Weekly fair draws crowds for pet birds and domestic animals

Standing as a witness to over a century of local trade and tradition, the Bhairab Bazar in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar remains one of the district’s oldest and largest rural markets. While it offers all kinds of daily essentials throughout the week, the bazar has earned particular fame for its Friday animal market, where pet birds and various domestic animals are bought and sold.

When visited on Friday (October 24), the western side of the market was bustling with traders and buyers gathered around ducks, roosters, pigeons, goats, sheep, and even rabbits. Rows of sellers displayed their birds and animals—some were regular traders, while many were local families bringing their own livestock to sell. Vendors showcased colorful pigeons, baby quails, and both black and white rabbits. The eastern section was reserved for goats, where several well-fed bucks were put up for sale.

Traders said animals are brought here from different parts of Sylhet division, and the market remains crowded for several hours until dusk, when it gradually disperses.

Located along the Moulvibazar–Srimangal road in Kalapur Union, the Bhairab Bazar has expanded over time. Once confined to the roadside, the market now occupies leased private land to the north of its original site.

Known locally simply as “Bhairab Bazar,” the market enjoys popularity not just in Srimangal or Moulvibazar, but across the Sylhet region. Many consider it the largest rural pet and livestock market in the area, with a significant impact on nearby shops, eateries, and local transport services.

Local residents say the market is over a hundred years old. It has grown over the decades, serving the tea gardens, haor (wetland) regions, and surrounding plains. While daily trading continues for fish, vegetables, and seasonal produce, the Friday animal market has been the highlight for the past two decades.

Buyers and sellers travel from Moulvibazar Sadar, Rajnagar, Kamalganj, and even from Shaistaganj in Habiganj. The market begins to fill around noon and reaches its peak by 2 or 3 pm, continuing until evening.

Bhairab Bazar leaseholder Liton Ahmed said, “This market is more than 100 years old. Around 20 years ago, it became famous as a trading hub for ducks, roosters, goats, and various pets.”

Traders from across Sylhet bring their animals here, while hobbyists crowd the stalls looking for rare or beautiful birds to take home. Buyers and sellers engage in lively bargaining, with many taking home birds or animals along with their cages.

A seller from Rajnagar said he brought two pet sheep, each fetching offers of up to Tk 10,000, but he refused to sell for less than Tk 12,000 and decided to return home with them.

Local trader Fahim Hasan remarked, “Bhairab Bazar is not just the biggest rural market in Moulvibazar—it’s one of the oldest and most vibrant in the entire Sylhet region. People come from far and wide to buy local livestock here.”

On Fridays, the market becomes packed with people, bringing brisk business not only to animal traders but also to nearby shops and restaurants.

Locals believe Bhairab Bazar today stands as more than just a market—it’s a symbol of heritage and a vital part of the region’s rural economy.
